Storyboarding and AI LD team workshop

I led the Learning Design team through a hands‑on lab that turned an abstract experiment into a repeatable course‑building practice.

I demonstrated my process of using Spark AI, structured datasets and a tested storyboard templates to transfer learning content from minimal sources into topic pages ready for Canvas. I showed how I set clear RAG and chunking rules, tune AI temperature to remove invention, and embed assessment relevance on every page so learners see purpose before detail.

I also showcased my collaborative documents and TextBlaze snippets that reduce authoring friction and make revision predictable for subject coordinators.

In a practical demonstration of Spark's AI Studio features, I led the team through an experiment to develop a Spark Dataset, and then a Spark Project to use some team data to generate some shared results. I facilitated the dataset documents, generation instructions and suggested prompts for the hands-on workshop.

Thank you to Nathan, Evelyn and Leigh for facilitating, sharing your excellent work and guiding us through a hands-on experience.

Network security and defense

I contributed to the resurrection and preparation of the Network Security and Defence subject, which had been inactive since September. Despite not being formally assigned to this subject and managing substantial commitments with my own assigned subjects, I provided critical content-related quality assurance feedback to support the team's efforts.

My involvement was particularly valuable given the challenges the team faced. The subject had been built several months earlier in April/May, making it difficult for the team to recall the original design decisions and content structure. The build learning designer was no longer available, which complicated the reactivation process significantly.

My technical expertise proved instrumental in understanding and addressing complex content issues that arose during the quality assurance phase. I worked collaboratively with the team to ensure the subject met the necessary academic and pedagogical standards before it was ready for teaching.

This contribution reflected my commitment to supporting colleagues across Melbourne Online and leveraging my technical skills to strengthen the broader learning design outcomes. My willingness to assist with this project, despite competing demands on my time, demonstrated the collaborative approach I bring to the Learning Design team and my dedication to upholding the quality of our subjects.

A big thank you to Leigh Canny,
Chris De Maria and Kate Morgan for jumping back into NSD which has been asleep since last September to get the subject resurrected and ready for teaching. This has been a bit tricky as the build LD is no longer around and the subject was built last April/May ish so it's a long time to remember back.

Leigh has helped with the content related QA feedback despite not being assigned to this subject nor having anything to do with the build and being particularly busy with his own assigned subjects. We are lucky to have Leigh's skills to understand tricky content.

Thank you all for helping get this done.

MO showcase - Ed Coding Challenges

For the April Melbourne Online Showcase I presented our Ed Discussion Coding Challenge activities and three key components of our learning design.

I discussed how coding challenges begin with clear purpose and task descriptions sourced from Canvas, including learning outcomes, acceptance criteria, and example inputs and outputs. I explained how scaffolding files provide structure through starter files with minimal boilerplate and marked TODOs, accompanied by unit tests, sample input files, and helper libraries. I noted that hints and progressive prompts sit in separate files, allowing learners to uncover them incrementally without revealing complete solutions.

I covered the solutions reveal mechanism, which exposes solution files that run and pass all tests when activated. These solutions pair code with explanations walking through approach, complexity, trade-offs, and common pitfalls, with key lines highlighted and annotations explaining design choices. I discussed the pedagogical thinking behind these choices and mentioned that instructors can control reveal behaviour through instant, time-locked, or optional settings, and that explanations include diagnostics and links to related resources.

I introduced the Replay feature, which records edit-and-run history as a timeline of snapshots. This allows learners to step through each compilation run, review test results, inspect code states, and revisit console output. I explained how filters enable viewing only failing runs or regressions, and how run logs can be exported for reflection or assessment purposes.

Melbourne Online 'Do great then iterate' value award

I was part of the team recognised with the Melbourne Online Do great then iterate value award for Q1, 2026, recognising my contribution to the Ed Discussions project.

Own it together
Different by design
Students at the heart
Do great and iterate

Huge snaps to the Ed Discussion project team —
Akane Fujimaki, David Edquist,
Chris De Maria, Nathan Killoh, Leigh Canny, Chris Nesci, Catherine Naghten (and me!) — and to Samantha Eyre for her thoughtful feedback along the way.

When Ed was requested to be used in the Master of AI, we had a big project on our hands, how can we implement a new LMS into our current LMS and make sure that it is implemented in a way that students don't get lost moving between the two platforms, how can we build efficiently and keep information organized, can we roll the subject over within our current process and how can we keep using this tool as clear as possible and more...

This was a real team effort to prototype and bring everything together in a way that’s simple, sustainable, and easy to roll over as a template for other subjects.

Special mentions:
  • Akane and Leigh for sharing inspiration from how they’ve used Ed in the past.
  • David and Chris D for testing how Ed could be used and rolled over, working through my long list of ideas and 'what ifs' and testing to get what we needed. David put a huge amount of thought into helping me to designing an approach that makes this streamlined and sustainable.
  • Nathan, Chris N, Akane, Leigh and Cat(herine) for designing clear signposts to guide students seamlessly from Canvas to Ed.
  • Akane, Cat(herine) and Samantha for reviewing progress and providing feedback to strengthen future iterations.
  • Akane and Chris N for helping me to build a fancy student instructional interactive.
  • Cat(herine) for bringing the student experience lens and tightening up the instructions.

So grateful for the support and collaboration this is such a strong example of what we can do when we design thoughtfully and work together to iterate as we go.

We now have resources, instructions and a process to make the next few builds with Ed easier.

Well done peeps!
