H5P Workshop

I presented the innovative design of unique H5P Structure-strip H5P elements for the Ben interactive for Monash Online's PSY4111 in the Graduate Diploma of Psychology. The H5P workshops brought OES LDs and LDAs from Melbourne, Cape Town and Edinburgh together to share their wicked problems and workshop H5P solutions.
The H5P workshops over the last two weeks were hugely successful and fun - thank you to everyone who came and shared their previous work, ideas and enthusiasm. I am always reminded during these workshops of how true it is that two heads are better than one. And when we combine the experience, creativity and willingness to explore new ideas from a creative group like ours we really do come up with amazing work for our students.

PSY4111 'Ben' critical thinking interactive series

I was tasked to innovate an interactive solution to an important piece of critical thinking learning for the GDP unit PSY4111.

Using HTML, CSS and Javascript I developed the email interactive which includes a feedback mechanism using H5P.

If you see Leigh, could you give him a big high five for his work on the critical thinking stuff? It's so impressive to see someone reinterpret a brief to make it a hundred times better.

H5P lead-in sentences for ITO5147 Data exploration and visualisation

I developed a special approach to instructing student in the use of H5P interactives for Monash Online's ITO5147 Data exploration and visualisation for TP2 2023.

Using Font Awesome icons, CSS abd Bootstrap styling, I emulated the buttons and controls of the H5P interactives and included those into the instructions for the activity.

By surrounding the activity and the instructions in a shadow box, it appears to students that the instruction sentence is an integrated part of the H5P itself.

The following images capture the use of H5P in ITO5147 Data exploration and visualisation.

ITO5147 Data visualisation

I respectfully disagreed with ITO5147 academic over pedagogic direction of the unit, but was able to develop a respectful collaboration.

good to see you noting how you worked well with a very challenging stakeholder in ITO5147!

I'm comfortable delegating tasks to other LDs. I entrusted the development of ITO5147 H5P activities and HTML embedding to our LDA while I was on leave.

Canvas Studio Instructions for students

Through my work with the Canvas Studio Project, I collaborated on the development of improved instructional resources for students when the new video platform Canvas Studio was introduced to Swinburne Online, and other OES partners in 2022.

I designed Canvas Studio general instructions H5P using a generic template generated elsewhere, into a version better designed to help learners.

You have participated in and led several projects that have had a large impact on both the way we work and the experience our students have as the end user. In particular, your work on creating instructional resources for student use of Canvas Studio

Canvas Studio Project

I was invited to join the Canvas Studio Project Team in 2021 to test and implement the video devlivery platform into Canvas. As part of that team, I did the following:

  • User testing and insightful advice in the Canvas Studio project.
  • Developed instructional resources for student use of Canvas Studio
  • Participated in the Canvas Studio project where I brought a wealth of experience to the group. I proved to be an asset in designing test cases, testing solutions in Canvas, designing student instructions.
  • Designed Canvas Studio general instructions H5P using a generic template generated elsewhere, into a version better designed to help learners.
  • Created use-cases and tested the functionality of Canvas studio and reported on it's suitability to perform compared to Kaltura.
  • Technical assistance and advice on Canvas Studio and other technologies to podmates and to other pods across the LD team including via OES Learning Design Training.

Watch the following Canvas Studio help resources video in which Leigh explains a code solution to a difficult error which plagued many LDs.

Thank you for all your user testing and insightful advice in the Canvas Studio project. You've been a real asset to the team, bringing a wealth of experience to the group. It's great having you as part of the team! Thank you.

HLTENN010 Apply a palliative approach in nursing practice

Build achievements

  • Palliative care case studies using H5P Course Presentation.
  • Applied trauma-informed learning design methodologies, including UX design choices.
  • Redeveloped on-campus learning materials to support student's engagement with difficult content.

Thanks Leigh. That was really great, and considering we're moving into the Graduate Certificate of Domestic Violence units at the moment, this looks really really great...

Chemical Engineering Technical Report Writing Module

I worked closely with Chemical Engineering teaching staff and the Academic Skills unit to develop the Technical Report Writing Module. The module targets writing skills in areas which Engineering students are known to be typically deficient.

Developed for the Canvas LMS platform and making use of the H5P LTI plugin, the module is an interactive and student-centered experience which teachers can embed into their teaching program.

I can’t tell you how happy I feel seeing the module fully mocked up in Canvas. Wow! You’ve done a fantastic job translating my basic copy into a fully functioning and interactive experience for students. Thank you! I’m so grateful you persisted with H5P, too – it has made such a difference!

Arts Graduate Essentials Moodle modules

I designed and implemented the student-user-experience for the Arts Graduate Essentials Moodle modules. I designed interactivity using Moodle's restricted access functionality as well as designed and developed the structuring and and flow of pages within Moodle Lessons. I developed and embedded H5P interactive activities.

Creating Interactive Content with H5P Workshop 2019

I developed the workshop, the content and the Moodle site experience for Creating Interactive Content with H5P, an Educational Design workshop in the 2019 workshop series.
The Moodle site contains resources to help Monash Faculty of Arts teaching staff develop their use of H5P (a Moodle integrated tool for developing interactive content).
Of particular interest is the 🏆Interactivity Challenge which is a 'gamified' experience that guides users through various levels of achievement in order to expose users to various different H5P content types.

Corporate Sustainability Modules

I helped create the Corporate Sustainability modules. I worked with academics to design and develop the interactive elements which test students' understanding of the lecturer's content. In most instances I developed H5P Interactive content.

H5P Con 2018

At the 2018 H5P Conference, I delivered a working paper called "Gradable Videos for Proficient French", to the global H5P community of software developers, content creators and academic educators. In the paper, I recommended improvements to H5P based on pedagogical insights gained during the French Proficient H5P Grammaire development.

Conference program

View the H5P Conference 2018 Program for Monday 03 December, 2018

Working paper description

The Challenge: Teachers in the School of LLCL: French Proficient 2 unit face the challenge of: Requiring students to prepare for class by completing grammar exercises. Requiring students to prepare for class by watching video grammar lessons.

The Solution: H5P exercises that integrate with Moodle gradebook Make gradable videos. IE: To build H5P interactive video which grades students according to how much (%) of the video they have watched.

Conference responses

Positive conference reactions to "Gradable Videos for Proficient French" indicated that my approach to H5P was stimulating and engaging.

Proficient French H5P & Moodle

In 2018 I began collaboration with an academic in the school of Lanuages, Literacy, Communication & Literature to develop of the H5P Grammar component of Proficient French. The online, interactive approach was intended to alleviate the problem of students of Proficient French being unprepared for their class-time seminar. The H5P interactives guide the student user through various French grammar topics using Interactive Video, Question Sets, and Fill the Blanks exercises. The allocation of graded marks and the carefully constructed interactive sequences using Moodle's restricted access functionality, helped motivate students to prepare for their face to face lessons.

Proficient French Moodle site

The 2019 redevelopment of the Proficient French units saw further refinement of the H5P interactives based on student feedback about their learning experience.
