Banner Panels in TextBlaze

I developed a TextBlaze system for easily generating code for QUT's mobile-responsive banner panel Canvas HTML elements.

Early iterations offered LDs to choose from a list of coded 'banpan' elements, but this approach eventually breached TextBlaze's character length restrictions.

The new innovation allowed all 'banpan' versions to use the same generic code but with the inclusion of cynamically inserted variables to control the image, the colour and the class.

The development required the use of TextBlazes advanced editing features:

  • dropdown menu
  • if/else conditions
  • formulas

Ah we will miss your giant LD brain Leigh!

AIATSIS map of Indigenous Australia

I developed an interactive to display the AIATSIS map of Indigenous Australia for Monash Online's ITO5205 Data in society Indigenous Data Soverignty module.

The map makes use of the Easy Zoom platform for exploring large images in detail.

I redeveloped the same content for QUT You's QUT002 Walking on Country unit.

Oh you absolute legend - this is fabulous.
This is exactly what I wanted the students to be able to do.
Thank you!!!!

Text-alternative design for accessibility

I developed a new system for image text-alternatives to use in QUT Online Canvas units. The previous system of linking to a seperate Canvas page was unweildly and did not meet accessibility standards. I developed the new design using the details/summary HTML elements to be more engaging, interactive and accessible.

The interactivity is now a button class which includes a hover state, so it is a bit more accessible and also consistent with QUT's existing button approach

TextBlaze

In 2024, I have been developing my skills with TextBlaze, a very useful tool to make learning design more efficient and consistent.

Innovations I have developed in my team's code snippets include the use of:

  • Input fields to enable user choices
  • If/else conditions to process user's choices
  • Formulas for dynamic calculations
  • Variables to insert data into the code snippets
  • Repeat loops for extensible code elements

Innovation is in your blood, Leigh. I don’t think you can not innovate! This year you have altered the way that the pod code and the way that they view Moodle. You are busy driving best practice coding in the team, which will be an ongoing project with Textblaze and Codeless Editor 3 into 2024.

STM101 banner HTML graphic replacements

I collaborated with OES' senior graphic designer and used my skills with HTML and CSS to develop this mobile responsive banner design for STM101 activity packs in Canvas, QUT Online's prepatory resource for STEM units.

The previous design relied on images only - and was inaccessible for designers and for students.

The following images represent different Canvas screen widths for Activity Pack 4: Further web development.

It looks great Leigh 😄 I'm happy with the results, always keen to collaborate on responsive graphics.

LD Lounge (ITO4131 Java programming)

As Senior Learning Designer, I was tasked to invent a system to track changes to units that needed to cycle elements each time they would run for Monash Online.

Rather than rely upon an external platform to hold this information, I developed the 'LD Lounge' in collaboration with our Learning Design Assistant (LDA); an area in Moodle, hidden from students, for LDs and LDAs to visit whenever the unit is rolled-over and various items need to be updated. The idea is similar to the 'OLA Lounge', a concept that OES uses for unit teaching teams.

In the case of ITO4131 Java programming, the assigned game that the students would build would be changed each teaching period, as would the quiz questions from the question bank.

The LD lounge is the ideal place to note these changes because the data would carry over into the next teaching period with the rest of the unit.

The ITO4131 Java programming LD Lounge is going to be my one-stop-shop for what to update when I'm doing this rollover.
Lets put it into ITO4132 next!

EDF5770 Designing for interaction and collaboration

I developed a system of interchangeable modular topic content intended to be included next to other relevant learning material.

The modular insertion used Moodle's quiz embedding functionality. I employed a JavaScript linked external CSS file to replace the default Moodle quiz style with the EDF signature graphical style.

Additionally, each modular is interactive, offering students an explanatory 'What is this?' pop-out to explain how the modular content should be viewed and also the opportunity to explore examples in the 'Digital platforms the could be used' accordions.

@Leigh Canny. Pod QA complete. A great interesting unit about my favourite topic - interactivity :). Loved the java too! Comments are in the rubric as usual. Thank you!

H5P Workshop

I presented the innovative design of unique H5P Structure-strip H5P elements for the Ben interactive for Monash Online's PSY4111 in the Graduate Diploma of Psychology. The H5P workshops brought OES LDs and LDAs from Melbourne, Cape Town and Edinburgh together to share their wicked problems and workshop H5P solutions.
The H5P workshops over the last two weeks were hugely successful and fun - thank you to everyone who came and shared their previous work, ideas and enthusiasm. I am always reminded during these workshops of how true it is that two heads are better than one. And when we combine the experience, creativity and willingness to explore new ideas from a creative group like ours we really do come up with amazing work for our students.

ITO4001 Foundations of computing

I managed workloads for Monash Online’s ITO4001 Foundations of Computing unit build. I worked with the academic team at Monash University to develop suitable materials for online learning.

With competing priorities, I managed the build time by building an initial module for other LDs to emulate and instructed my team to follow the design.

I also worked with OES’ LD STEM specialist to develop and produce interactive activities.

You feel more confident in the area of workflow and allocating out work to the team.

Working with Monash Coursework Template & Moodle 4.1

As part of the Monash Online leadership group, I used my extensive knowledge of Moodle and background in Monash Online pedagogy to develop a response to the challenges of the institutional changes to Moodle.

Along with the upgrade to Moodle 4.1, the university had developed an LMS template that would have proved incompatible with the established pedagogical approach of Monash Online units, so I developed the Working with Monash Coursework Template strategy.

The strategy document outlines a technical learning design approach that Monash Online and OES could take to preserve our pedagogical integrity while accommodating the imposed changes.

Great work

PSY5020 Family violence practice foundations: 'Daniel' animation

Build achievements

This animation was a collaboration between our learning designer and the graphic designer and me who developed the HTML/Javascript to make the interactive animation work.

The animation solution was a response to the challenge of presenting the content from the Say it out loud: Our Stories page in a more digestable and engaging way, and with consideration of trauma-informed learning design principles.

This is awesome Leigh and Callum! It looks so good and is a great way to capture attention for a Spark. Love it!

🔥❌🔥 Heat Exchange

As Senior Learning Designer, one of my development goals is to 'Contribute to an internal coaching program to support the development of Learning Designers and the broader LD pipeline.'

A key development in this area is the development of Heat Exchange; our 1:1 fortnightly one on one learning design coaching approach to LD development in the Monash Online LD team.

This program was a successful way for team members to develop their own special projects and interests with my guidance to help them achieve individual and team goals.

Embedded questions (ITO4001 Foundations of Computing)

In order to enhance student learning experience, I harnessed the Moodle quiz embedding functionality to embed check-your-understanding quiz questions throughout the learning material in Monash Online's ITO4001 Foundations of Computing unit.

The quiz embedding approach had multiple uses and supported business goals arond pedagogical application of technologies (new and existing) that enhance student experience.

the students enjoyed the unit and they appreciated the examples, exercises, quizzes, etc embedded in the unit, which they found quite effective for their learning.

Moodle question and reveal interactive

As part of our Heat exchange project, I mentored a team member and collaborated on the development of this interactive.

Conceptualising the format from an existing element in another business partner's LMS, we considered the pedagogical value of this type of student interaction with the learning material. We then developed Moodle-adapted code with the generative AI assistance of Chat GPT to accept user text input and to provide SME feedback. Later, we styled the product to be consistent with Monash Online styling.

Wow! I absolutely love this. What a game changer. It's these sorts of ideas that really enhance the quality of our existing offering and show that we're operating at the cutting edge of the industry. I'm confident that this not only contributes to student success and engagement, but it will strengthen the positive perception of OES by Monash.
