DENT90142 Professional Practice 1

I collaborated with the Redesign team Learning Designers, subject coordinators and lecturers to help launch DENT90142 Professional Practice 1 in the Doctor of Dental Science, the first subject of the MDS redesign.

Our work reimagining assessments, activities, and user experience helped to gather valuable feedback for changes in navigation, making it easier for learners and teachers to access specific content.

A huge shout out to Nicole and Leigh for coordinating, developing, and getting the course together in record time!

Psychology portfolio

I helped colleagues at OES begin their work on Psychology units in the Monash Online Masters of Methal Health program.

I helped the team interpret the ISAP pedagogy used for on-campus instruction in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and adapt that approach to a system that works within the Monash Online system of onlin study.

DATA

Masters of Mental Health is another course that is now performing well with an average SETU above 4.

The work you have done in PSY has also been instrumental in assisting the team to move forward with the Masters of Mental Health

Working with Monash Coursework Template & Moodle 4.1

As part of the Monash Online leadership group, I used my extensive knowledge of Moodle and background in Monash Online pedagogy to develop a response to the challenges of the institutional changes to Moodle.

Along with the upgrade to Moodle 4.1, the university had developed an LMS template that would have proved incompatible with the established pedagogical approach of Monash Online units, so I developed the Working with Monash Coursework Template strategy. 

The strategy document outlines a technical learning design approach that Monash Online and OES could take to preserve our pedagogical integrity while accommodating the imposed changes.

Embedded questions (ITO4001 Foundations of Computing)

In order to enhance student learning experience, I harnessed the Moodle quiz embedding functionality to embed check-your-understanding quiz questions throughout the learning material in Monash Online's ITO4001 Foundations of Computing unit. 

The quiz embedding approach had multiple uses and supported business goals arond pedagogical application of technologies (new and existing) that enhance student experience.

the students enjoyed the unit and they appreciated the examples, exercises, quizzes, etc embedded in the unit, which they found quite effective for their learning.

Moodle question and reveal interactive

As part of our Heat exchange project, I mentored a team member and collaborated on the development of this interactive.

Conceptualising the format from an existing element in another business partner's LMS, we considered the pedagogical value of this type of student interaction with the learning material. We then developed Moodle-adapted code with the generative AI assistance of Chat GPT to accept user text input and to provide SME feedback. Later, we styled the product to be consistent with Monash Online styling.

Wow! I absolutely love this. What a game changer. It's these sorts of ideas that really enhance the quality of our existing offering and show that we're operating at the cutting edge of the industry. I'm confident that this not only contributes to student success and engagement, but it will strengthen the positive perception of OES by Monash.

Essay writing interactive (LAW5800 Foundations of law in the digital world)

As part of our Heat exchange project, I mentored a team member and collaborated on the development of this interactive.

The interactive repurposes the familiar tabs HTML structure and adapts it to a more interactive learning model.

EDF5772 Innovations in technologies and pedagogical practices

I used my expert HTML and CSS skills to redesign the graphic elements for Monash Online's EDF5772 Innovations in technologies and pedagogical practices for TP5 2022.

I adapted existing elements and emulated the established graphical design style reflecting the theme of the unit's content on gamification in online learning.

The following images capture my styling of standard Monash Online module overview and module review elements into a theme consistent with the graphic design elements.

The following image captures my styling of the Poll Everywhere interactive elements which I introduced into the unit in the TP-22 redesign.

This is looking magnificent! The content tweaks we discussed have been remade into fantastic, interactive, self-guided activities. I particularly like the embedded PollEv feedback tools. A great idea.
I am very happy with all of this. The changes to badges and the personalised journey map on each module will be a great way to engage learners too.
Thanks for all your work on this - I think it will be a very successful unit.

Assessment scaffolding for ITO5205 Data in society

I led the learning design team in converting Monash's capstone ITO5205 from an on-campus delivery to online delivery for Monash Online.

The unit requires students to undertake assessments which are atypical in ITO units so, just as in the on-campus delivery, a lot of scaffolding was required to help students make the academic adjustment.

I developed the Grade Booster structure throughout the unit. Each Assessment Booster was a weekly deep dive into the assessment requirements for that week, giving students guided detail on the week's assessment requirements, including an analysis of the grading criteria.

ITO5205 was a good example of tying authentic assessment to the learning materials and a co-design approach with Monash academics and teaching staff to develop authentic assessment approaches.

The following image captures the Assessment Booster page dedicated Assessment 2: Privacy impact assessment.


Another assessment scaffolding structure I developed for this unit was the Research Resource block. Blocks appeared throughout the unit's learning materials. Each block highlighted a resource which students may opt to use for their final Ethical design report assessment

 

Pass-rate data indicated that the scaffolding structures in place in the unit were effective in allowing students to successfully tackle the unfamiliar assessment types.

Time-machine (LAW5812: The Global Professional)

I used Javascript to develop the time-machine interactives in Moodle. The system was used to store student data and make the data available later in the unit for students to reflect upon.

I'm looking forward to teaching this unit and really appreciate all the work you guys have done in getting it into such great shape with some really great interactive features.

Panopto for ITO5212 Data analytics for semi-structured data

I collaborated with academic unit designer to develop a system of video chaptering to present long lecture content for Monash Online's ITO5212 Data analytics for semi-structured data TP5 2022.

Using my knowledge of Panopto's editing features, it was possible to break down the on-campus lecture material into manageable pieces for students' learning.

In order to reduce the number of short videos for students, I supplied instructions how to navigate around within the longer videos to find the highlighted sections. Rather than present lecture recordings as a whole, I grouped the lecture content around boarder lecture themes within Moodle books, to provide a manageable sections dealing with related concepts.

Instructional lead-in text was added to alert students to the presence of the video table of contents with chapters targeting each lecture topic.

Development of an online teaching-focused professional development program for junior teaching staff

I contributed learning design expertise to co-author the Development of an online teaching-focused professional development program for junior teaching staff paper delivered to the 9th Research in Engineering Education Symposium (REES 2021) and 32nd Australasian Association for Engineering Education Conference (REES AAEE 2021) at The University of Western Australia.

The paper describes our work implementing a new professional development program for junior teaching staff during the 2020 and 2021 pandemic lockdowns and the shift to online teaching. The program aimed to equip them with information on best practice in online teaching as well as with an awareness of the resources available to support them.

The paper was presented under the Capability Development conference theme according to the REES AAEE Conference Program 2021 (Workshop Session 15C: Who (capability development)).

COS30043 Interface Design and Development

  • Designed interactive code-along experiences using CodePen, allowing students can try the code they are learning in video lectures.
  • Used CodePen to designed challenge activities for students to test their understanding at the end of each module.
  • Implemented gamification elements with unit Badgr badging system in Canvas which rewards students for completing specific coding tasks.
You have made a significant impact, particularly in the BICT units. You led the build on COS30043 which had a 8.60 SFU score and a 93% pass rate. This is the only BICT unit to have such a high score in both areas in it's first iteration online.

Remote Learning Student Survey

I developed the FEIT Remote Learning Survey, a diagnostic tool in Canvas to assess students’ satisfaction with the transition to remote learning in 2020.

I wrote descriptive Likert questions to enable students to engage with the survey, and short answer questions to allow students to provide additional feedback.

Questions related not only to teaching adaptations to the turmoil of lockdown learning, but also FEIT's response to learning design challenges, as well as how the switch to remote learning affected the students' own ability to learn effectivelys.

Now, and especially during the shift to online teaching, Leigh has been invaluable and has gone above and beyond to help our academics structure their teaching so that it is engaging and uses all the tools possible ...

Teaching & Learning Innovations Newsletter

To generate engagement with the Teaching & Learning Innovations in Engineering and IT Sharepoint site, we generated the monthly Teaching & Learning Innovations email Newsletter.

The newsletter would draw together the published Sharepoint content from the previous month and promote the site to the Engineering and IT faculty academic and professional staff.

The monthly promotion was a great way for remote teaching staff to learn about the innovations that other faculty members were implementing during the transition to online learning in 2020 and 2021.

It is great to see how Leigh and Glen Currie are sharing their findings via the MSE online teaching newsletter.

Teaching & Learning Innovations in Engineering & IT

I worked in partnership with a multi-disciplinary team of Engineering academics to develop Teaching & Learning Innovations in Engineering & IT.

The SharePoint site shares stories of teaching innovations from across Melbourne School of Engineering & IT. The site launched during 2020's COVID19 lock-down and so the focus became sharing innovations in remote and online teaching and learning. Regular focus topics included digital assessment, synchronous and asynchronous learning activities, remote management of groupwork and alternatives to specialist learning activities like laboratory classes.

The site enabled teachers to learn from colleagues successes and encouraged isolated teachers to attempt new innovations in their subjects.

Thank you for setting up the ground work for a new TLU. The SharePoint site and the materials you continue to churn out, are of excellent standard. Well done

MCEN30018 Fluid Mechanics - Flipped Approach

I developed an improved student experience for lecture content delivery for Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at MSE in 2020.

Previously students’ access to the online materials was made difficult by non-intuitive LMS organisation. Students are now guided through weekly pre-class modules featuring embedded video content covering theoretical concepts interspersed with check-your-understanding quizzes.

This flipped approach allows teaching staff more time in class to explore practical demonstrations in more depth, providing a richer experience for students.

I especially appreciate how helpful Leigh is with queries about Canvas; he always responds quickly and gives clear instructions/offers to help step you through things if you need.

Canvas for Engineering and IT Learning

I was invited to present training at the Canvas for Engineering and IT Learning workshop series delivered to Engineering academics on the use of the new LMS.
  • The first presentation was on the topic of "Canvas tools to make complex concepts easy". My interactive presentation, titled "Is the Traditional Lecture Dead?", used the inbuilt presentation tools in the University's lecture capture platform; Echo360. I showcased the effectiveness of tools such as polls, prediction questions, discussion topics, progress restriction, multimedia, Q&A, and Echo360's powerful analytics tools.
  • In a second presentation: "Publishing Videos: Considering the student experience", I illustrated ways in which teachers can position and contextualise their video content for a more engaged student experience.
